Productivity Lock Privacy Policy

Effective date: July 13, 2026

Productivity Lock is a consent-based personal browsing-control extension for Chrome and Microsoft Edge on Windows. It classifies browsing activity to block categories selected by the user and works with a companion application installed on the same computer.

Information the extension processes

To provide its blocking and classification features, Productivity Lock may process the current page URL and domain, page title, search query, headings, snippets, visible text, metadata, image alt text and captions, media signals, links, YouTube video metadata, and available captions or transcript text. It may also process whether a navigation was allowed, blocked, uncertain, or temporarily unlocked.

How information is used

This information is used only to apply the user's configured browsing rules, classify ambiguous pages and videos, remember high-confidence decisions, show blocking pages, diagnose operation, and record local accountability or security events.

Local companion and storage

The extension communicates with the Productivity Lock companion application through the browser's native messaging interface. Configuration, passcode verification data, API credentials, learned decisions, and event logs are stored locally by the companion application. API keys and passcode hashes are not stored in the extension frontend or browser extension storage.

AI classification

When optional cloud classification is configured, page or video context needed for classification may be sent by the local companion to the user's configured AI provider, currently OpenAI. The user's API credential is supplied and stored by the local companion. Productivity Lock does not sell browsing data, use it for advertising, or share it with data brokers.

Accountability features

If the user configures an accountability partner or SMS provider, non-secret review or security events may be sent through that provider as requested by the user. Provider credentials remain in the local companion configuration and are not exposed to the extension frontend.

Retention and deletion

Local decisions and event logs remain on the user's computer until they are cleared through an authenticated Productivity Lock control or the application is uninstalled. Data sent to an optional third-party provider is governed by that provider's retention and privacy terms.

Data security

Productivity Lock limits cloud transmission to classification requests initiated by its blocking workflow. Communication with cloud providers uses HTTPS. Native messaging stays on the local computer.

Chrome Web Store Limited Use

The use of information received from Google APIs will adhere to the Chrome Web Store User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.

Changes

This policy will be updated if Productivity Lock's data practices change. The effective date at the top identifies the current version.
